Fiji is in the process of making its independence day on Thursday, July 1, 2019.
Fiji’s government has announced it will begin the celebration on that day, which will mark the 70th anniversary of the signing of the treaty with Britain.
Fiji has long been a staunchly pro-independence nation, but has had difficulty negotiating an independence deal with the United Kingdom.
The country is also still seeking independence from its former colonial rulers, the United States and Britain.
In 2017, Fiji’s Prime Minister Fai Titi, also known as Dr Fijian, signed a deal with Britain for its accession to the Commonwealth of Nations, the successor to the British Empire.
Fijians are currently members of the Commonwealth.
