The celebrations of independence are very important in Algeria, and in a way, it is a time of celebration for Algeria as a whole.
However, many people, including Algeria’s former leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika, have criticized the use of independence day as a way to justify Algeria’s independence, especially given that Algeria is in a state of war with France.
Bouteflikas government has claimed that Algeria’s people have suffered and that France’s colonial rule in Algeria has been an obstacle to the Algerians’ independence.
Algeria’s President Abdelazez Bouteflan said in 2017 that he would not use independence day to justify his government’s war against France.
“We are fighting against the French occupation and they are the occupiers, not the people,” Bouteflon said in an interview with France’s Liberation radio station.
“The independence that we are fighting for is not about the freedom of Algerians, but the freedom to fight against France.”
Boutiflika’s government also used independence day for political purposes.
In 2018, Algeria was declared the Republic for the second time in history, in a move that marked a significant shift in Algeria’s political history.
